An Óige offers year-round volunteer opportunities at our two international hostels – Glendalough International Hostel and Knockree Hostel. Both are set in stunning locations, surrounded by nature, and offer a welcoming community of fellow volunteers from around the world.
Our Hostels
Knockree Hostel
Once a traditional farmhouse, Knockree Hostel is located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, overlooking the Glencree Mountains. Just 40 minutes south of Dublin city, it can host up to 90 guests across 17 rooms (2–8 beds per room). Some rooms are ensuite, while others share facilities.
Glendalough Hostel
Situated beside the world-famous Glendalough National Park, this hostel can accommodate up to 120 guests in 39 rooms (2–10 beds per room). It’s an ideal base for exploring the valley, lakes, and monastic ruins of Glendalough.
The Workaway Experience
We welcome volunteers all year round through our Workaway Programme. In exchange for 15 hours of work per week (typically 3 hours a day, 5 days per week), you’ll receive free accommodation and breakfast.
- Work is usually from 10am–1pm and mainly involves cleaning bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, reception, and common areas.
- During busy group stays, volunteers may also assist with kitchen duties at breakfast, lunch, or dinner times.
- While weekends are our busiest period, you’ll always receive two days off per week (though they may not always be consecutive).
Food & Facilities
Meals: Breakfast is included. Lunch and dinner are self-catered, but when the hostel is catering for guests, volunteers are also invited to join for dinner.
Kitchen Access: Volunteers have full use of a well-equipped self-catering kitchen. Many enjoy cooking and sharing meals together.
Shops & Transport: Enniskerry has a small grocery store, and regular buses connect you to Bray (with larger supermarkets) and Dublin city.
Accommodation: Volunteers share rooms with fellow volunteers (private or couple rooms are not available). Bed linen, towels, and laundry facilities are provided.
Extras: Free Wi-Fi, cosy lounges with sofas, and even some friendly hostel cats to keep you company! 🐾
Community
At any given time, we host around 10 volunteers (more in summer, fewer in winter). It’s a great chance to meet new people, learn new skills, and experience Irish hospitality.
We are a friendly, inclusive, and diverse team, welcoming volunteers of every race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, background, and social status. Discrimination of any kind is not tolerated – everyone is valued and respected.
What We’re Looking For
The work is not difficult, but it is hands-on. We are looking for people who:
- Don’t mind cleaning and can work independently.
- Are reliable and willing to commit to the agreed time period.
- Enjoy being part of a team and community environment.
Application & Screening
As part of our commitment to creating a safe and secure environment, all applicants must undergo a screening process.
Because the role involves working in hostels that welcome youth groups, volunteers must provide two character references (not from friends or family).
To apply, please send your CV and references to:
